Lunging - not so well

Howdy!
Today, it was warm, so I grabbed my Clinton Anderson leadrope, Valley's Parreli halter, and headed towards the pasture. It didn't take too long to catch Valley. When I did, I lead her to the middle of the pasture, and I flexed her a few times, then I got on her when she stood still. I only stayed on for a minute or two. Then I hopped off, and decided to lunge her. Aaand... it didn't go so well. She kept jumping up, pulling back, and once, kicked at me really hard. It was sort of a buck, but she aimed her kick at my head, but luckily she was a few feet away, so it was only about 2 feet away from me. I would have continued, so Valley didn't think she was getting away with being bad, but I didn't have any gloves, and I was getting rope burns. So I took her up the the house, and I got my gloves.

I started to lunge Valley again. How did it go? HORRIBLE!! She was even worse than she was in the pasture. She kicked out at me several times, she pulled back everytime she was trotting near where the gate to the pasture is. Every time I made her change directions, she'd 'rear' up to turn, with her ears back. Then she started to go TOWARDS me, with her ears back, trotting, and NOT happy. So I grabbed her halter, and made her back up, and back up, and back up, and back up. She's not so good at backing up, but I let her stop. Then I took her up to the house, by the trampolines. I probably made a mistake by stopping her from lunging when she was being bad. But I made her back up, so maybe that helped some. But anyways... I held the leadrope, and go on the trampoline and started jumping. At first, Valley was a little nervous, but the she licked her lips (I think, I can't remember correctly), and rested her back hoof. So I stopped jumping, hopped off, and petted her. After that, I took her on a walk around to the drive way, and by the fence which is by the rode. I walked her along the fence, until we got almost to the gate that leads into the pasture. Then I took her through the woods, and back down by the lake.

I sat on Valley for a minute or so, then hopped off, left Valley grazing, and ran up to the shed. I grabbed a hoofpick, dandy brush (I think that's the right name...), and a mane and tail comb, and ran back down to Valley. First, I picked out Valley's fore feet, then brushed her over, and combed out half her mane (she was grazing, and I didn't want to lean over a whole bunch to comb it out).

I didn't want to end Valley's training with just brushing, so I decided to lunge her around for a few circles. When I did, she didn't do excellent, but she still did better than before. I was happy to end her 'training session' on a good note, so I put her back in the pasture. She stood there for a few seconds, then cantered around to the back of the barn. Then she galloped to the other side of the pasture, where Chloe was.
Well, that's all, so ttyl!

Love,
Sarah
